Match Report

Stoneleigh 3-4 AFC Lanes (10 Feb)

Again we arrived at Fortress Auriol hoping for an all important win but little did we know what excitement we were about to witness.

Everyone wanted one thing from the game -  a goal. After  a long recent goal drought, nearly as big as the one over in Cape Town we wanted the ball to hit the back of the net.

The game kicked off without much of a threat to either goal. Carlos lined up with the ever-present Casper in goal who was really dominating his area in the first 15 minutes. Casper was lined up behind George The Rock who was looking to re-create his solid performance a week ago. Ernie lined up in the centre midfield and he was working incredibly hard to support The Rock then attack with AH9. Jack was on the left looking forward to giving their right-back nightmares with his wand of a left foot. Billy was playing in a more advanced wing role as he attacked as if his life depended on it.  Up front was AH9 who was aggressively battling it out with their centre back and winning the battles alongside Fans Favourite (Lucas).  No Nonsense Ewan, Kante (Alex) and Hannah where raring to come on. Dusan was the player listening on the radio. AH9 and Ernie put pressure on the Lanes backline and it was paying off, a couple of half chances were carved out.  The Rock and Casper did have to deal with some half chances too. Casper was quick off his lie to smother some shots. This early possession all changed when Lanes brought on Akinfenwa. He took his first chance and Lanes took a lead. Shortly after that, their keeper helpfully passed the ball to Aidan who was at a very tight angle and he just put the ball wide of the far post. Then Hannah threaded a perfect through ball to AH9 who was not going to miss this time. A GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL was scored. It was all Stoneleigh now and unfortunately they couldn’t score before the whistle to end the first half went.

In the second half Lanes won a free kick, it was taken with so much power that there was nothing  the defence could do when  a Lanes player deflected the ball in. Carlos then made his subs Fans Favourite came back on along with Kante and No Nonsense. They all made a big difference with No Nonsense not taking any nonsense. Kante was dominating the middle off the park. Hannah was playing through balls which AH9 latched onto but the decent GK did well. Fans Favourite was driving towards the now-petrified centre back. Lanes then added another when Akinfenwa converted from close range even though VAR may have helped. Immediately, Aidan then pounced on another keeper scramble to put the game back in the balance. Now the famous white and black were pressing amazingly hard to get back on level terms. AH9, Lucas & Kante all went close but all out attack is risky as they know and they were brave but were unlucky when their winger added a fourth. That wasn’t it though there was a full minute to go and when Jack’s calm side foot finish went in and the Fortress Stadium was rocking. Sadly the 2 seconds added on weren’t long enough.

Carlos said again that we need to keep our heads up and the win will come.

Players of note:  Alex and Casper who took most of the pitch home with him on his shirt
